Isaac Levitan was a celebrated 19th-Century Russian landscape painter who was relatively unknown in the West. He was a member of the independent group of artists known as Peredvizhniki, or The Wanderers, for whom landscape paintings were a proud expression of Russian identity. Isaac Levitan became known for his ‘mood landscapes’ which were brimming with feeling and atmosphere. “Can there be anything more tragic,” the painter wrote in 1887 to his friend the playwright Anton Chekhov, “than the feeling of endless beauty in everything around you, to observe the hidden mysteries, to see God in everything and not to be able, realising your inadequacy, to express all these great emotions adequately and fully?” . Sunrise over the snowy coast of South Portland, Maine in the US reveals the Atlantic Ocean topped with a layer of ‘sea smoke’. This variety of fog is caused by very cold air flowing over a body of comparatively warm water. Air just above the surface is heated by its contact with the ocean and picks up moisture evaporating off the water. As this air mixes with the gentle flow of cold air above, it cools rapidly and some of the moisture it picked up condenses into visible droplets. The effect is rather like the steam visible above a mug of tea in a cold room. Usually, sea smoke is thin, rising from the surface in delicate columns that are dispersed quickly by the breeze. Occasionally, like here, it can be much denser. Sea smoke’s rising columns of condensation have been known to reach up as high as 20 to 30 metres. . The Northern Lights get all the glory. Often overlooked, but equally as spectacular are the Southern Lights, also known as the aurora australis. Like their northern counterparts, these are light emissions from oxygen and nitrogen gases in the upper reaches of our atmosphere that have been excited by energy drawn down as the ‘solar wind’ of charged particles from the Sun interacts dynamically with the magnetic field around our planet. The resulting light shows appear directly overhead in regions known as the ‘aurora ovals’, which are rings roughly centred on the magnetic north and south poles. One reason the Southern Lights receive less attention is because the aurora oval in the south is generally situated out over open ocean. When it is seen from land, it is typically off in the distance on the southern horizon. It also tends to appear red rather than green, since that is the colour emitted from the oxygen highest in the atmosphere (above 100 miles / 150 km) still visible above the horizon line. Red aurora are harder for us to see since our eyes are less sensitive to red light than green, and they are presumably why in the traditions of Aboriginal Australians, the Southern Lights are typically associated with fire. . The sport of ballooning, which began in the late 1700s, was to change our relationship with clouds. Once we could ascend into atmosphere level with the clouds, we no longer considered them to be quite so mysterious. The Victorian art critic and essayist John Ruskin, for instance, noted in 1856 that “Whereas the medieval never painted a cloud but with the purpose of placing an angel upon it…, we have no belief that the clouds contain more than so many inches of rain or hail.” At the start, however, the mystery came from the balloons themselves. An early test balloon sent aloft by the French physicist, Jacques Charles, was carried by the gusts of a storm to a village some miles away. There, startled peasants believing it to be a monster coming to attack them proceeded to rip it to shreds with scythes and pitchforks. . Cirrocumulus is the least common of the ten main cloud types. It is a high-level formation consisting of many tiny clumps of cloud, which typically appear just in patches across the sky. Here, the Cirrocumulus stretches right to the horizon with a slightly rippled appearance. If you want to get technical, call it Cirrocumulus stratiformis undulatus.
