Hi NYC, Come this Sunday (3-5pm) to the 84th St Books of Wonder and make a pop-up paper “speaker” for your phone! Workshop is intended for kids, but I’ll also be talking about pop-up books, signing copies of This Book is a Planetarium, etc. (so: all are welcome) *************************************************** I’ve made 15 kits, so if you’re certain you’re attending, RSVP in advance: 212.989.1804 (and plan to hit the big planetarium at AMNH afterward—it’s only a few blocks away.)

Long-term projects have this awkward way of demanding a ton of isolated concentration and then becoming abruptly/uncomfortably PUBLIC. . It has been a surprisingly touching two weeks of getting this planetarium book/thing out into the world. Thanks for saying hi, being excited about the stuff I'm excited about, and making it feel like my [kinda feral] ideas have a place. Why it works:

This book is [gasp…] out TOMORROW! And you can actually play the instrument page. - - Why it works: Sound is produced when something physical vibrates and moves the air surrounding it—whether that object is a string, vocal chords, or a speaker. This instrument is able to produce a variety of pitches by regulating how quickly the string vibrates. When plucked, the strings move back and forth rapidly, disturbing adjacent air molecules with waves of pressure—similar to the ripples of a water droplet in a placid pond. Our sensitive eardrums can sense these minute disturbances in the air and our brains interpret them as sound. What makes a stringed instrument “musical” is its ability to reliably produce very precise pitches  of sound through varying thicknesses of string. More taut (and thinner) strings vibrate more rapidly—producing a higher pitch sound. Because thick strings have more mass, they vibrate more slowly and therefore produce a lower-frequency sound. - - - #thisbookisaplanetarium

This planetarium pops up out of the book as well. You can use a flashlight or iPhone to project the autumn night sky (of the northern hemisphere) under your bedsheets, on a closet's ceiling, or on the walls of a tent. It teaches about our relative position in the universe and also discusses some cool properties of light. - - How it works: To successfully magnify and project the constellations, the planetarium’s structure takes advantage of a few universal qualities of light: Light beams travel through transparent materials, bounce off of reflective surfaces, and are halted by nonreflective objects. Here, most of the light is blocked by the paper walls. However, the unobstructed pinhole of each star permits the light to  pass thrugh in a discreet pinpoint beam, which projects outward in a straight line toward the ceiling. Like all light in Earth’s atmosphere, these beams can’t move outward in a straight line forever—they will hit air, water, dust, or other material—eventually dissipating back into darkness. The beams, collected and powerful at the source, begin spreading out laterally as they move away from the pinhole—resulting in a larger, but weaker and blurrier circle of light. (Shadow puppets exhibit this quality of diffuse magnification.) Controlling how light spreads is the fundamental task of many familiar tools—from a movie projector’s spread to the unlikely and incredible power of a laser’s tapered beam. - - Note: The planetarium’s sky and the real sky above you may differ. Outside, the night sky is on an annual loop. As the Earth orbits the sun, the seasons change and so too does our vantage point of the universe—we gaze out upon a slightly different part of the universe every single night. The specific arrangement of stars that you see actually reflects your specific position in both space in time. - - - - - #thisbookisaplanetarium #near…………far (out in 6 days! [omg])

This pop-up paper megaphone also lives in the pages of the book I made. You can use it to make your phone's music seem much louder than it actually is. (It also enjoys tagging-along on picnics!) . This is the principle that its structure demonstrates: . . The speaker works because its conical structure takes advantage of the directional manner in which sound waves travel through air. Some types of waves—such as AM/FM radio waves—pass through solid surfaces, while others—such as sound waves—may vibrate, bounce, or refract off of objects.  Normally, when sound waves exit a tiny speaker, they rapidly disperse far and wide, eventually receding back into the stasis of silence. Here, sound enters the small taper of the cone, and its widening shape traps and delays the waves’ escape. The cone corrals the sound waves, so that they bounce out in unison, resulting in what appears to be louder—but is actually ‘focused’—sound. Horned musical instruments, analog megaphones, and even just cupping your hand around your mouth to magnify a shout all work in this same manner. By controlling the sound waves’ direction, these methods prolong their inevitable dissipation. . . #thisbookisaplanetarium

Fritz Kahn, Karl Gerstner, and Kenya Hara are some of my all-time design heroes and somehow my work (with @tinybop) got snuck into a show/book alongside theirs! (there's some self-pinching happening…) - 'Can Graphic Design Save Your Life?' is now a book—and is up at the Wellcome Collection in London. - If that title makes your skin crawl a little, it should. However, the essays therein make an interesting case about what being a designer can mean. (It is sort of a guidebook showing how transparency, clarity, logic, and accessibility can lead to a safer, fairer, more-informed world.) I only have mine on hand to post, but the others are better. - More at printmag.com (photos and write-up by @thedailyheller )

One of my favorite spreads from This Book is a Planetarium (the pop-up book of interactive-things I've been working on.) It is a spiralgraph* drawing generator. - - All of the paper gadgets function due to their structure alone —there are no hidden mechanisms (they are designed to tap into the magic of how the physical world inherently works.) - - On this page, the reader can learn about the mathematics of curves and rotation by observing the different shapes produced by each hole in the assorted wheels. The book demonstrates (and explains) that the resultant shapes are the product of a physical type of programming. It's pretty fun to play with (and makes a concept tangible that is an abstraction to most people.) - - #thisbookisaplanetarium

Drew nail salon workers, food cart vendors, female construction workers, domestic workers, and other groups of NY-ers that the Center for Urban Pedagogy has worked with/for in this past year for their benefit invitation. - CUP is awesome: they produce materials / do outreach to empower less-visible groups by getting them engaged in civic life. (And just generally work to raise awareness about available civic resources for everyone… their beautiful predatory housing handbook from a few years back is one of my favorites.) It was an honor to make something for them.
