Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio (11 November 1974 in Los Angeles, California) is an American film actor, producer and Oscar award winner. He is one of the highest paid and most successful contemporary actors in Hollywood and works regularly with renowned directors.
DiCaprio became known to a wider audience through the role of the mentally handicapped boy Arnie Grape in Gilbert Grape - Somewhere in Iowa, for whom he received his first Oscar nomination in 1994. He achieved worldwide fame in 1997 with the portrayal of the destitute ship passenger Jack Dawson in James Cameron's film drama Titanic. For his roles as aviation pioneer Howard Hughes in Aviator, as stockbroker Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, and as Trapper Hugh Glass in The Revenant, he received a Golden Globe for his performance. For his role as Hugh Glass in 2016 he also received the Oscar for Best Actor.
He was born as the only child of his parents in Hollywood, Los Angeles. His father is a comic book author and salesman George DiCaprio and his mother is a former lawyer Irmelin Indenbirken-DiCaprio. His father is a fourth-generation American citizen of half Italian and half German descent. From his father's second marriage with Peggy Farrar, he has a stepbrother, the occasional actor Adam Farrar, who, however, since the late 1990s has repeatedly come into conflict with the law because of various offenses.
His career began in the late 1980s at the age of 14 with appearances in commercials, including bubble gum Bubble Yum and Kraft cheese and as a casual actor in educational films. His breakthrough came in 1990 with the role of Garry Buckman in the television series Parenthood, based on the film of the same name from 1989. In the soap opera California Clan he took over the role of the young Mason Capwell. DiCaprio gained increasing prominence in the sitcom Our Loud Home, where he played the street boy Luke Brower in 1991 and 1992.
The eleven Oscar winning film production Titanic, which currently ranks second among the most commercially successful films of all time, was the actual career boost DiCaprio in 1997. By portraying the destitute ship passenger Jack Dawson, who falls in love with the social norm in a young wealthy woman named Rose, the then 22-year-old turned into a superstar, along with worldwide popularity as a swarm of girls and women.
With his "Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation" founded in 1998 at the age of 24, DiCaprio is committed to environmental protection and global warming. The expression of his commitment is the documentary film 11th Hour, written and co-authored by him in 2007 - 5 before 12, on the manifold environmental crises that threaten mankind and its planet. In the US presidential elections in 2004 and 2008, he supported each of the candidates of the Democratic Party (2004 John Kerry, 2008 Barack Obama ).
In December 2013, DiCaprio joined the car manufacturer Venturi Automobiles and founded the racing team Venturi Formula E Team with its founder Gildo Pallanca Pastor. Commenting on his entry, DiCaprio said, "The future of our planet depends on our ability to build fuel-efficient cars based on clean energy. Venturi Grand Prix has demonstrated tremendous foresight with the creation of an eco-friendly racing team and I'm happy to be part of that effort." Since 2014, the racing team has been competing in the new FIA Formula E Championship series. In 2015, the actor was named Chairman of the Sustainability Committee of the racing series. This body is primarily concerned with the promotion of electric mobility and thus wants to promote the spread of electric cars, especially in cities.
In 2014 DiCaprio was named UN Peace Ambassador and gave the opening speech at the UN Climate Summit in New York. In it, he called climate change as the biggest challenge of humanity and called on governments and industry to take immediate and clear action.
In January 2016, DiCaprio was a guest at the Annual Meeting 2016 of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he received the Crystal Award from the WEF for his work against climate change and the protection of endangered species.

#Regram #RG @nytimes: This small agricultural village in the hills of Indonesia's Sumatra island is a testament to happy days in human-elephant relations. When the village — Gajah Makmur, which means “Prosperous Elephant” — was founded in 1991, residents nursed an injured wild elephant back to health. But then it disappeared into the forest, never to be seen again. But when wild elephants raided, villagers organized into brigades and used everything they could gather — pots and pans, a megaphone — to scare off the rampaging giants, forcing them to a palm oil plantation elsewhere. It was just 1 example of how the rapid expansion of palm oil plantations into elephant territory in Indonesia has brought humans and elephants into more frequent conflict. Increasingly, that conflict is deadly. Sumatra, in the western part of the country, has one of the largest populations of Asian elephants outside India. But their numbers are decreasing quickly, from an estimated 2,800 in 2007 to around 1,700 in 2014. Along with habitat destruction, poaching is considered a major threat to the species. @kemaljufri took this photo of an elephant transporting palm oil tree branches. #Regram #RG @stevewinterphoto: @stevewinterphoto @natgeo Here are 2 cubs cooling off and relaxing in a tree. Jaguars are the 3rd largest of the big cats. Found from US / Mexico border to northern Argentina. Jaguars have rebounded in this area where 95% of the land is privately owned. In the past many ranchers would kill the cats when they ate their cattle. Today in this area tourism brings in much more money to the local economy than cattle ranching. So the jaguar population is increasing. But revenge killings of jaguars happen close to this area and all throughout the jaguars range. Also poaching for skins, bones and teeth is growing for the first time since the 1970’s to feed the demand for Asian Traditional Medicine and luxury items from endangered species. “Stop the demand and the killing can too.” @wildaid My first story with big cats was the 1st @natgeo Jaguar story 20 years ago! It has changed my life working with the magical and magnificent cats of the world. Animals have emotions just like we have-kids hang out and play like these 2 cubs. Forests provide us with up to 50% of the oxygen we breathe - oceans the rest. They give us 75% of the fresh water. If we can save the forest of the Amazon and other areas in Central and South America for the JAGUAR and Puma. The forests of Central Africa for the leopard, lion, elephants etc. And the forests of South Asia for the Tigers and Leopards. If you save the top predator in any ecosystem you save everything that lives with them. So if - We Save Big Cats we can help Save Ourselves. #followme @stevewinterphoto to see more images from my work with @natgeo and Thanks!! @stevewinterphoto @natgeo #nglive@natgeochannel @natgeowild @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #fursforlife #bci #bigcatsintiative #startwith1thing @projetooncafari @refugioecologicocaiman @pantheracats @pantanalsafaris @africanparksnetwork #canonusa@CanonUSA #reddigitalcinema@africanparksnetwork @sanctuaryasia @reddigitalcinema

#Regram #RG @natgeo: Photo by @FransLanting Emperor penguins never set foot on land. They gather on the sea ice that forms around Antarctica each winter to raise their young. It’s a race against time because they have to fledge their chicks before the sea ice melts in late summer. It is hard to know yet what the ultimate effects of climate change will be for these remarkable birds, but the worst-case scenario is that the sea ice will start melting from under the feet of young emperors before they are ready to go to sea. The birds cannot go anywhere else because the massive edge of the Antarctic ice shelf prevents them from going inland. Just like polar bears in the Arctic, emperor penguins are totally dependent on sea ice for their survival. They are like canaries in a global coal mine when it comes to bearing witness how our planet is changing. #Regram #RG @sea_legacy: Photo by @DaisyGilardini // The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially classifies the polar bear as "Vulnerable" on its Red List of Threatened Species.™ The worldwide population of polar bears is estimated to be between 22,000 and 31,000 individuals, of which roughly two-in-three — anywhere from 60% to 80% — live in Canada. Around 600 official hunting tags are licensed each year to native Inuit hunters, who can then sell those tags to non-resident trophy hunters, in some cases for tens of thousands of dollars. Local stakeholders, area residents, Aboriginal people — First Nations, Inuit and Métis — guiding outfitters, trophy hunters, scientists, researchers and politicians of all stripes all have strong opinions about fluctuations in the polar bear population, based on their own private agendas, interests and beliefs. One fact is clear, though, regardless of the debate: Climate change is real, verifiable and plain to see. And so is the threat to the species. #turningthetide #wapusknationalpark #polarbear #explorecanada

#Regram #RG @conservationorg: December 2008: Ecuador’s Socio Bosque Program Launched . In 2008, Conservation International launched the Programa Socio Bosque in Ecuador, which pays private landowners and indigenous communities to protect forests. Socio Bosque is a program that directly targets areas that generate benefit for climate, freshwater, species and poverty alleviation. Since the program’s inception, over 50,000 people from indigenous and rural communities have received direct economic benefits through Socio Bosque. Over 510,000 hectares of forest and paramos (AKA alpine grasslands and wetlands) are now protected through Socio Bosque. What started out as a simple mantra, “people need nature to thrive,” has led to 30 years of leadership in the conservation space. For the next 12 days, CI is taking a look back on our journey and accomplishments together, and the work that lies ahead. Follow along at #12daysofconservation

#Regram #RG @mattiasklumofficial: A manta ray glides over me and my camera in Indonesia's Raja Ampat. Mantas are filter feeders and eat large quantities of zooplankton, which they swallow with their open mouths as they swim. Mantas do visit cleaning stations for the removal of parasites like in this short film. The largest mantas can reach 1,350 kg (2,980 lb) and at least 7 m (23 ft) in "wingspan". In 2014, Indonesia brought in a fishing and export ban as it realized that manta ray tourism is more economically beneficial than allowing the fish to be killed. A dead manta is worth $50 to $600 while manta ray tourism can bring in $1 million during the life of a single manta ray. Indonesia has 2.2 million square miles of ocean and this is now the world's largest sanctuary for manta rays. Mantas have one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of all fish and if approached with care and respect they can be curious and spend a long time with you. The coral reefs of Raja Ampat are some of the richest marine habitats on Earth. Let's protect Raja Ampat and other fragile marine- and terrestrial ecosystems on this vulnerable and magical planet! The end of the year is a time to reflect on the role we can play in protecting our planet. From reducing our carbon footprint to taking pressure off the ocean, there are immediate ways to make a difference. Eating fish is better for the environment than other meat protein, reducing both our carbon footprint and the pollution from industrial agriculture. Sustainable fish farms also take pressure off endangered ocean species so they can regenerate. The health of the planet depends on the health of the ocean, which is why I support and invest in @I.LoveTheWild and their efforts to help all of us do our part. Link in bio to learn more. #Regram #RG @nytimes: A group of plainclothes investigators assembled outside an animal smuggler’s house in the Himalayas recently, waiting for signs of life. Working off a tip that 2 baby #chimpanzeeswere illegally passing through Nepal, the investigators burst into the building, where a menagerie of exhausted animals began to wail. In recent years, authorities in Nepal have arrested hundreds of smugglers who have taken advantage of Nepal’s porous borders with India and China, corrupt law enforcement and loose customs rules to illegally transport rhinoceros horns, wool from Tibetan antelopes, rare owls and endangered apes. But for seized animals, problems continue after they’ve been intercepted. In Nepal, the 2 chimpanzees that were rescued are now at the center of a spat with the Nigerian government, which is calling for them to be returned, and local wildlife officials, who want to keep them at Nepal’s Central Zoo. @samreinders took this photo of the 2 #chimps, Champa and Chimpu. #Regram #RG @greenpeace: @CristinaMittermeier, Antarctica / Icebergs, along with polar bears, have become another “canary in the coal mine”, warning us that urgent action is required. My name is Cristina Mittermeier (@cristinamittermeier), and I have made it my life’s work to tell the story of our world’s oceans. Drilling for oil, expanding oil pipelines, and failure to listen to what science that is telling us, may have irreversible consequences on the planet. If we are going to reverse climate change, the time to act is now. Every other breath we take comes from the sea. Our planet is made up of more than 70% ocean, and while we, as a species, have done significant damage, there is still time to make things right.  My partner Paul Nicklen (@PaulNicklen) and I are taking over Greenpeace International, and Greenpeace Canada’s (@greenpeace_canada) Instagram feeds. #Regram #RG @amazonfrontlines: What is life in a forest where the water has been poisoned? For more than half-a-century the Kofan, Siona, Secoya and Waorani peoples of the Amazon have lived downriver from Ecuador’s largest oil fields, which have contaminated their rivers and creeks and gravely impacted their health, while enriching the oil industry and providing fuel for the automobiles of modern society. Today, oil companies continue to pollute rivers and streams while using the allure of access to electricity to convince remote indigenous communities to allow these companies deeper into their territories. We believe that building indigenous-led solutions to these threats is fundamental to ensuring the autonomy and empowerment of the oldest guardians of the Amazon rainforest. #Regram #RG @wwf: 📷Image by @EverydayExtinction contributor @adriansteirn There hasn’t been a more dangerous time to be a pangolin (Pholidota). The species has become the most trafficked mammal in the world. They are illegally traded for their scales, as bush meat or for medicinal purposes. But the threat of their extinction rarely makes news. An organisation in Zimbabwe aims to change this by educating the public about an animal many may not know even exists. Enabled by the @TikkiHywoodTrust, a group of men dedicate their lives to rehabilitating captured pangolins. They are entrusted with caring for animals that have endured major stress, often having been transported many kilometres bound in a sack, starved and dehydrated. Eight species of pangolin exist, four Asian and four African, all appear on the IUCN Red List, ranging from endangered, to critically endangered and vulnerable, all eight of the species' populations are decreasing. With the depletion of the Asian populations, poachers have redirected their efforts to Africa. Marine Harvest and Cermaq have ignored them and continue to ignore them, going as far as to attempt to evict them from parts of their own territories. The current occupation of Midsummer Island fish farm by members of the Musgamagw Dzawda’enuxw lasting almost 80 days was ordered to an end by the Supreme Court in Vancouver yesterday. To add insult to injury Marine Harvest will be allowed to restock the farm with more diseased salmon smolts and continue decimating the marine eco-system of this coast. The occupation of Swanson Island by the Namgis Nation remains at this time. #turningthetide #getsalmonfarmsout #justinpjtrudeau@johnhorgan4bc @bcndp

#Regram #RG @natgeotravel: photo by @andrea_frazzetta // Rwanda. A picture of Muhoza, a Silverback Gorilla living in the forest of the Volcanoes National Park. There are only several hundred mountain gorillas remaining on Earth, and about half live in the forests of the Virunga mountains in central Africa. Gorillas can climb trees but are usually found on the ground in communities of up to 30 individuals. These troops are organized according to fascinating social structures. Troops are led by one dominant, older adult male, often called a silverback because of the swath of silver hair that adorns his otherwise dark fur. A gorilla group is named after the Silverback leading the family. Each gorilla group has distinct and unique characteristic quiet different from another. The animals are peaceful, gentle, social, and mainly vegetarian creatures. Many conservation initiatives are meant to aid mountain gorillas, and it is believed that their numbers may be steady or slowly increasing. Still, they continue to face major threats from habitat loss and poaching. Follow @andrea_frazzetta to know more about my next projects #rwanda #gorilla #mountaingorillas

#Regram #RG @unfoundation: This photo was taken by photographer @jasonbhouston as part of our ongoing #eyeonclimateseries—a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of climate change impacts and solutions around the @UnitedNations’ Annual Meeting on Climate Change, #COP23. "Because of unpredictable flow levels and more and more rapid changes in the river courses, river travel, which is essential for regional trade around Puerto Breu, Peru, is becoming increasingly difficult. Human habitation of the Amazon can be traced back over 10,000 years, and over that time the indigenous tribes who live there have become intimately adapted to the predictable, well-established seasonality that defines these forests. The effects and impacts of #climatechange including rising temperatures and unstable hydrological cycles is leading to a laundry list of threats to those living in the Amazon, including more frequent drought, decreasing fish stocks, increasing prevalence of malaria and other diseases, crop failures, and forest fire.” -@jasonbhouston How is your #EyeOnClimate?
